If you want success in your side hustle, think before you start one.
Careful consideration could mean the difference between you giving up in a few months, or building something that will grow and become profitable for many years to come.
To figure out what will work for you as an individual, you can ask yourself simple questions like those I will go over in this article.
So, what should you consider when determining what side hustle is right for you?
What are you passionate about?
If you don't love it, you'll probably quit.
I feel that one of the most important things for the long-term success of a side hustle is whether you enjoy it or not, especially if you already have a job.
Think about it. It's one thing to have a 9-to-5 that you don't really love but you depend on to support yourself. Your side hustle, on the other hand, will be much easier to quit.
In the early days, as you're trying to get things off the ground and build your side hustle, it can be discouraging to see that you're not making an income. It may seem like you're not getting anywhere or making any progress.
If you're doing something you hate in the hopes that it will eventually make you rich, but it's going nowhere, will you want to keep going?
Start a side hustle doing something you love, and your passion can help keep you going when the money isn't there yet.
If you find your day job boring, starting a side hustle is a great opportunity to explore your interests, passions, and creative side, all with the chance to supplement your income.
So ask yourself the simple question: what do you love to do?
Chances are there is a side hustle for that.
How much money are you willing and able to invest?
Some side hustles will be more expensive than others.
Rest assured, there are many that you can start with little or no money.
You can write on a platform like Medium or start a newsletter.
You can sell digital products through an online marketplace that doesn't charge too many fees.
You can start an online side hustle on a budget.
But this is something you need to consider.
How much money are you willing to part with before you start making a profit?
Will you advertise?
Will your business have a website?
Will your business need inventory to get started?
Your budget can play a major role when determining the what and how of your side hustle.
So, if you know you have limited cash to spare, consider these points so that you don’t start a business and then find it costs more to keep it going than you can afford to spend.
How much time do you have?
Not everyone has the same amount of spare time on their hands.
And some side hustles are more time-consuming than others.
So, when you’re thinking of your dream business, consider all the responsibilities and daily tasks that would come with it.
Then, think realistically about whether you would have the time in your day to handle it all.
Do you have a day job? Kids? Do you go to school?
Make sure you can sustain your side hustle long term before putting in all the effort only to discover you can’t.
How much money do you want to make?
A big question to ask when considering a side business is how much you are hoping to make.
Perhaps you only want to supplement your income.
Maybe you're saving for a big purchase, and you're in need of some extra cash.
Or maybe you’re hoping to build something that will enable you to quit your day job altogether. In this case, you need an idea that is profitable enough to replace your full-time income.
Any of this is possible, but you must consider the profitability of your potential side hustle and decide if it aligns with your goals.
Do you want it to grow into a full-time business?
Is your ultimate goal for your side hustle to become your full-time hustle?
Obviously, some side hustles are better suited for this goal than others.
Taking surveys online is unlikely to scale into a full-time business.
But running an online store could easily go from a hobby on the side to replacing your day job if you are successful with it.
Do keep in mind that you can take advantage of more than one opportunity to make money online.
You could maybe consider combining multiple side hustles if needed to boost your income.
Just remember to keep in mind your goals, hopes, and dreams for the future when deciding what online businesses might be right for you.
That way, you don’t waste any time or money on something that won’t get you where you want to go.
